Component Solutions for Industry Ltd Develops Secondary Heat Recovery Unit for Leading Oil Burning Boiler Manufacturer

CSi’s core Component Solutions for Industry (CSi Ltd) based in Thetford, Norfolk have developed a new condensing heat recovery unit for a leading European manufacturer of oil fired boilers. The unit is now required for that company to offer increased energy efficiency in anticipation of enhanced European Fuel Efficiency Regulations for new boiler installations.

The new heat recovery unit efficiently takes the hot boiler exhaust gases, which can be up to 300°C, and vents to the atmosphere at about 80°C. The recovered heat will be used to preheat water as it enters the heating system. The corrosive Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂) is collected in a condensate management system for safe neutralisation and disposal.

CSi Ltd has based this design around a patented high efficiency stainless steel tube designed for products that must recover heat when operating in a very hot and corrosive atmosphere. Type 904L stainless steel was chosen for this application due to its ability to withstand the corrosive effects of Sulphur Dioxide.

The heat recovery unit is designed for use with the customer’s oil fuelled boilers rated from 18 to 24kW. It is tuned to match the back pressure and efficiency needs of a particular boiler and is therefore not suitable to be retrofitted to a boiler of a different design. The unit is very compact as the boilers are designed to be installed in a domestic application.
